McCain UK Cross Country Challenge
Updated: 3rd December 2008
17 year-old Lothian Running Club triplets, Robert, Sarah and Mhairi Inglis were among a strong Scottish contingent who descended on Liverpool on Saturday [29th Nov] for the second leg of the McCain U K Cross Country Challenge.
And with the event also incorporating the trials for the European Cross Country Championship in Brussels later this month the Lothian trio once again found themselves brushing shoulders with Britain's best.
Sefton Park was shrouded in freezing fog as the various races got underway.
Following on from leading her Edinburgh team to victory in the Scottish University Championship's the previous week, Sarah Inglis turned in another sterling performance in the under 20 Junior womens race.
Eleven home Scot's were among the total of 130 athletes who completed the 4.4km course with Sarah finishing in a very creditable ninth place in 15m 19s, an improvement of six places on her run from the first leg at Gateshead last month.
Mhairi Inglis also contested the race but unfortunately her time and finishing place wasn't recorded.
The race was won by Emma Pallant, Aldershot, Farnham and District who was also triumphant at Gateshead.
Despite finishing further down the field than he did at Gateshead, Robert Inglis felt he turned in a better performance on this occasion.
Competing in the Junior Men's race Robert was up against very strong opposition.
He acquited himself fairly well however completing the 6.7km course in 22m 32s to cross the line in 64th place, with 101 athletes completing the course.
First place went to David Forrester 20m29s from the local Sutton St Helens club, he was also the victor at Gateshead.

The cross country action continues this Saturday [Dec 6th] with the Scottish Athletics East District Championships at Bell Baxter Academy, Cupar, Fife.
A good turn out of runners is expected from the Lothian Running Club for all the races, which vary from under 13's through to seniors.
This is the principal event for East District team selection for the Inter-District Cross Country Championship at Holyrood Park,Edinburgh on January 10th 2009, with the first eight home in each race guaranteed automatic selection.
The first race at Cupar gets underway at 12.30pm.

Scott Nelson was the only Lothian Running Club athlete to contest the Hugh Wilson Memorial 10k Road Race at East Kilbride on Saturday 29th November. 116 runners completed the course with Scott finishing well up in 34th place and 10th MV40 in a time of 34.00s.

A good turnout of Lothian Running Club athletes were in action at the second match in the East District CC League at Broxburn on Saturday.

Tinto Hill Race - Record turnout but no record time.
Updated: 9th November 2008
In the build up for ‘Tinto’ 2008 I was satisfied with the certainties that it would be rainy or dry and Jethro would win or lose.
However, I was unsettled with the three dilemmas facing me.
The second dilemma of the day was what should I wear to race? [The first already having been overcome by my decision to get in the car and attend]. As the conditions changed by the minute, from rain, mist, winds and sunshine I wasn’t sure if I should go with long sleeved waterproof, tracky trousers, shorts, bum bag, hat, gloves or any permutation of these. In the end, looking at the mist at the summit and thinking how many biscuits I’d scoffed this summer, I opted for the full body cover as it was going to take me a while. There were a few ‘Lothians’ there, Jill, Saran, Alistair and Martin of course. It was handy having the team car to stow all my stuff.
The third dilemma came much later as it was to do with downhill ‘bit’, I had to get up first. For most folk (average hill running mortals) Tinto is a fairly short uphill ‘run’, as the short gentle uphill bit at the start is OK, but then it gets too steep and windy to run much more. At one point it seem to become a walking up the rest of the hill the fastest race. The skill seems to be lean forward and push your legs down with your hands till you get to the top. Anyway, the huge cairn loomed up ahead, bringing the encouragement of all downhill to the finish. I don’t think I’ve ever appreciated the view from the summit, there’s no time apart from a quick glance round while watching where to put your feet among the rocks and keeping ahead of the person behind you. The third dilemma of Tinto is which line to take downhill. Until you’re flying down, dog tired, trying not to tumble, you don’t notice the variety of surfaces there are: small scree, large scree, grey, red, firm grass, eroded grass, gravel track, peat steps, marsh, mud and deep bog. And towards the end you’re too tired to care, a straight line is best! Then the nice flattish bit at the start is a real pain because you need more effort to propel yourself forward after just having held yourself back down the slopes.

Tinto Hill Race.
Updated: 9th November 2008
Lothian fielded a very healthy six runners in the Tinto hill race on the 8th November - probably our biggest turn-out for a hill event since the Devils Burden.
The end of season Tinto Hill Race became the most popular with 260 competitors turning out for the 25th running. Unsettled weather which became dry, with a head-wind for the ascent and slippery underfoot conditions gave much slower times than usual.
Congratulations to Saran Jones and Jill Horsburgh for completing their first hill race - both did well on their debut. After Alice's brilliant run in the tiptoe the pressure was on Jill and she acquited herself well.
Lorna Eades also did well, finishing just before Jill.
The men included our more experienced hill runners in the form of Tosh Brannan and Jim Alexander. David Mumford, new to the club this year, built on the success of his fine run at Dumyat back in May.

Bess McKay and Matthew Bulow had good hill running debuts (correct me if I'm wrong) for the club.

Lasswade AAC Open Cross Country
Updated: 6th November 2008
Mud glorious mud
Did some of you know what I didn't about the mud at Lasswade? Perhaps that accounts for the fact that the only Lothian runners were Alice, Iain and Jill Horsburgh, Dave and Carol Mabon, Lauren Arbuckle and Alistair Robertson. Far less than the usual turn out. However the sun shined and a good day was had by all despite that desperate hill (which us oldies have to tackle 3 times) and the fact that we all looked as though our legs had been spray painted grey by the end of it.
It's a really friendly meeting- get along there next year, but remember to take wellies, a towel and lots of clean kit.

SCOTTISH TITLE FOR SARAH AND AWARDS FOR RACHAEL AND ROBERT.
Updated: 4th November 2008
Sarah Inglis led her Edinburgh University Hares and Hounds team to the title at the Scottish University Road Relay Championships at Baillieston on Saturday [Nov 1st].
The format was teams of three running 4.5 miles each.
Sarah was first away for Edinburgh, and the Lothian RC athlete conjured up a marvellous run with her time of [27.42] being the joint second fastest of the 52 runners who each ran a leg of the race.
Sarah handed over to team mate Hannah Edwards [28.13] with Fiona Thomson[27.42] anchoring the team to victory with the same time as Sarah. The Edinburgh team came home nearly three minutes ahead of second placed Glasgow University Hares and Hounds.
Meanwhile on the same evening, the Lothian Running Club's Rachael McIlwraith and Robert Inglis were in attendance at the Scottish Games Association's annual presentation awards dinner/dance in Glenrothes to pick up awards for their efforts on the Highland Games circuit during the 2008 season.
Rachael, in her first full season on the games circuit finished in third place in the Youths points league for races over 400 metres, the previous three years the same league was won by the Lothian Clubs Sarah Inglis[2005], Mhairi Inglis[2006] and Robert Inglis[2007].
This year, the latter, who was in his first season in the Open events collected the award for finishing runner up in the points league for events over 400 metres.
None of us however won any prizes for our dancing prowess!

(However in spite of her late night, Rachael was still able to beat me round the 350m Dechmont wood lap the following morning - Matt).

NATIONAL CROSS-COUNTRY RELAYS CUMBERNAULD 25TH OCT.
Updated: 30th October 2008
Athletes at Saturday's National Cross Country Relay Championships at Cumbernauld had to endure horrendous conditions.
Gale force winds along with driving rain and extremely muddy underfoot conditions made the event a real endurance test.
As last week at the East District CC League match at Deans it was the Senior/Junior Female team which was the most successful with the trio of Edel Mooney and sisters Sarah and Mhairi Inglis finishing in fourth place missing out in a top three position in a photo finish.
49 teams contested the Senior/Junior Females race, with each team having three athletes running 4000 metres each.
Sarah Inglis led off the Lothian team and completed the course in 6th place in [17.26], Sarah handed over to sister Mhairi for the second leg, she kept the team in contention in 8th place in [18.44], the final leg runner Edel Mooney turned in a sterling performance with her [16.50] which was the third fastest leg of the day, taking her into a challenging position for second place, however in a thrilling finish with only three seconds seperating second ,third and fourth, Kilbarchan AC took second with Springburn Harriers in third and Lothian just missing out on a medal in fourth, in fact it was so close that the latter two teams were given the same time. Victory in the race went to Central AC.
Another duo of Lothian athletes who ran a leg of the race were Helen Murray[20.08] and Saran Jones[21.25].
The Senior Males race was teams of four running 4000 metres each.
There was a marvelous turn out of 66 teams in this category.
Robin Galloway was first away for Lothian returning a [16.47] for 38th place, Robert Inglis went off for the second leg and was soon passing runners and moved the team up to 20th place with an excellent [15.46].
As conditions deteriorated third runner Scott Nelson got round in [18.41] for 31st place. Darren Thomson completed the final leg in [18.48] to bring the team home in a final position of 37th. Kenton Jones [17.58] and David Mabon[25.35] also completed legs for the Lothian club.
Victory went to the team from Central AC.
The Young Female's race is for teams of three, an under 13, under 15 and under 17. Lothian RC fielded two under 13's and an under 17.
First leg runner Marie Mclaughlin returned in 35th place in [13.13], she handed over to Lauren Arbuckle who got round in [14.52] for 51st place.
Final leg runner Rachael McIlwraith improved the team to a final finishing place of 40th with a good [12.20].
In all 49 teams contested the race with victory going to Dundee Hawkhill.

Dunbar - another perspective.
Updated: 9th October 2008
It's a funny thing, racing. One person's good race can be another person's nightmare. I was this other person. The first mile was bearable. After that it was 'will this race never end?'.
The wind was so strong that I had to draft everybody I could just to stay upright. This involved running about 6 inches behind the person in front - in a strange crouched position. Unfortunately this caused the person in front to run away. Don't blame them - strange hunched old bag practically head butting them in the back. I must have helped a dozen people to PB's.
The hill seemed to go on for ever. The last part of the accent was up a field full of tussocks, thistles and sheep poo. Dodge, ouch, squelch, trip, ouch, squelch. I don't remember being blown uphill. Jill is thinner than I am, I didn't get wind assistance. But at the top the wind was so strong that I could hardly move. I couldn't even breathe as the air was moving too fast to go in my mouth. All that happened was all the spit blew out of my mouth onto my face. I think there was a nice view of the sea and beach - I couldn't see it, however, as I had to keep my eyes scrunched up to stop my contact lenses blowing out. I kid you not. Yes, Jill, there was a downhill bit, but it lasted about a minute.
At this point the urge to give up was nearly overwhelming. The last part of the race was conducted with me muttering oaths to myself. Several people passed me. After a quick glance they ran away without passing the time of day. I had turned into a hunched, poo spattered, spit streaked, mud covered obscenely muttering old bag. My legs belonged to someone else - unfortunately, that person was sitting at home with their feet up. Even ladies passing me in the last mile could not muster up any fighting spirit on my part.
How we managed to win the team prize is a mystery. And although Jill was too modest to mention it - she won the supervet prize.
Never again…….I am retired as from now.

Highland Games - Final Points Totals for 2008.
Updated: 7th October 2008
The 2008 Highland Games season is over and all the results are now in and the various Scottish Games Association points leagues have now been tabulated. The leagues show athletes from the Lothian Running Club have had another successful season on the circuit.
Robert Inglis had a marvelous first season in the Open events finishing runner up in the 1600/3200 metres league with a total of 54 points, sisters Sarah and Mhairi Inglis were also on the board in this league, Mhairi accrued a total of 14 points with Sarah gathering 10 points, due to other athletic commitments Sarah only competed at three Highland Games but managed to win three races at Oban. Jill Horsburgh also managed on the board in this league with six points.
Mhairi also finished well up in the Open 400/800 league with a tally of 14 points again. A good overall total of 28 is very good for Mhairi considering she only joined the circuit half-way through the season at the Airth Games at the end of July.
In the Open league up to 200 metres, father and son John McStewart, Armadale and Alan Stewart, Blackburn were both in the points, veteran John ,thanks to a win at Inverkeithing had a total of 16 points while Alan had four. Bathgate sprinter Darren Thomson also did well racking up 15 points.
Female youth athletes from the Lothian club had a really good summer on the circuit occupying three of the top six places in the Youth's league for events over 400 metres, Rachael McIlwraith took third place with 25 points, Lauren Arbuckle fifth 18 points and Lana Turnbull sixth 15 points. Lauren also picked up nine points in the Youth's league up to 400 metres which gave her 27 points over the two leagues - a fantastic effort for an 11 year old.
10 year old Alice Horsburgh made her debut on the circuit this season and despite not picking up any league points she still managed to pick up prizes at a few of the games. She looks sure to do well on the circuit in season's to come.
Robert Inglis and Rachael McIlwraith owing to finishing in top three positions will pick up awards at the Scottish Games Association's presentation dinner in Glenrothes in November.

Dunbar 10 - a race full of surprises.
Updated: 6th October 2008
The first surprise came 3 days before the race when I finally checked out the website (in the absence of a route map). Dunbar 10, multi terrain race a.k.a. Doon Hill Race! First I'd heard of a hill!
Saturday morning dawned wild, wet and windy and didn't improve on the journey east. For the first couple of miles I struggled to keep up with the pack - how had they managed to warm up allowing them to take off at such a pace? (Saran and I had just cowered inside and moaned!).
The next couple of miles I felt a bit better and concentrated on staying upright. However the wind eventually came into its own on the couple of hundred metres up to the trig point on Doon Hill. Never before have I been blown up a hill.
From then on the race improved and I started to enjoy it - especially all the lovely downhill bits. The last mile was a bit of a struggle and I was disappointed to see nothing but water and yet another medal at the finish line... but inside there was hot soup, sandwiches, tea and coffee. Not a mention of the feed in the pre-race blurb - not that I was complaining.
And to round off a good race the Lothian women won first female team. Not bad considering the fact that Val, Saran and I are all what the kids refer to as super-wrinkly (known more politely known as super-vets).
Soup, sandwiches and a bottle of wine for later - now that's what I call a race!

This is not the normal sort of event that we report here, but a colleague was showing me his results and I noticed a couple of familiar names.
Well done to Scott Balfour, only representative of the intriguingly-named vintage category.
Also well done to Samuel Galloway, 2nd in the 9-10 years of age race.
Incidently I have been contacted by a Louisa Edmonston who runs a triathlon coaching, sports massage and conditioning company based in West Lothian. If this sounds like it might be of interest to you, please follow this link.

The full results of the Linlithgow Fun Run are now available.
There was a strong showing from our members local to the Linlithgow area with Alice and Iain Horsburgh, Ali and Erin Taylor, Conor and Eilidh Anderson, and Jamie Melling joined by Amy Lickley and Sam Jones.
Not bad given that so many of our youngsters were tackling the hills at Bonaly earlier in the day.
Once again, well done to all.

Four down at Two Breweries.
Updated: 29th September 2008
Four hardy Lothian runners took on the Two Breweries last weekend.
The race, both a counter for the SHR championship and Long Classics series, saw what must have been a record turnout.
Robin Galloway built on his Lomonds of Fife success with an impressive 18th placed finish in 03:09, up with some of the household names in the Scottish sport (if there is such a thing).
The old hands from the club were also present - Tosh Brannan finished the 18 mile/5000ft course in 03:53, while veteran hard-hitter Herbie McLean finished in 04:12 and Jim Alexander, who confided that the race nearly finished him off two years ago came in in 04:56.
Well done to all.

Linlithgow 10K and Fun Run
Updated: 24th September 2008
Huge turnout for Linlithgow - 16 Lothian runners took part in the undulating and this year, measured, 10K at Linlithgow. The course extension and warm weather added a minute to last years winning time.
Scott Balfour showed the youngsters the way to go finishing in 39:25. Kenton Jones did well in his first road race in a few months to finish in 41:47. Black-bitches-by-residency (so not really) Matt Richardson and Dave Mumford had plenty to run for against local rivals the Lithgae Harriers, but apparently Matt was feeling the effects of trailing around the gruelling Torduff Huff-Puff after Eoin earlier in the day (pathetic!).
Marie Storrie was quickest Lothian Lady, finishing in 45:24, just 14 seconds ahead of Saran.
Well done to everyone that ran, and many thanks to Linlithgow AC who ran a well organised race and provided the best t-shirts (yes - not cotton!) that I have seen in years - even better than the legendary long-sleeved 2001 effort.
The results to the Fun Run are not out yet, and all that I have heard so far is that Alice Horsburgh got a PB and someone lost their shoe about 10 yards into the race (not one of ours).
Although a reduced squad due to so many running at Bonaly, I know that the Lothian contingent included Alice and Iain Horsburgh, Conor and Eilidh Anderson, Ali and Erin Taylor and Jamie Melling - apologies if I missed you and well done to everyone that ran!

The results and photos of the Junior home International trial can be found here
The results for the Fun Run at Bonaly (or the Torduff Huff-Puff) are also available. Of course, the most notable result of the fun run was that 16 kids had a great run and arrived back at the finish happy. Of those 16, we fielded no less than 9, who were Matthew and Samuel Galloway, Lauren and Abi Arbuckle, Marie McLaughlin, Bethany and Scott Nelson, Erin Quigley and Eoin Richardson - well done to all.
In the serious races Chris Galloway was a winner in the U14 boys. Rachel McIlwraith and Lana Turnbull recorded competitive times in a close U16 girls while Sarah and Mhairi Inglis took first and third spots in the U19 girls.
In the U19 boys Robert Inglis and Alastair Robertson were 5th and 6th.
Edel managed to get all the fun run certificates issued in time to win the open race (first lady).
We have a few more photos of the fun run and the U14 boys and U16 girls, but unfortunately the photographer had signed up for a road run in Linlithgow and had to leave early. Well done to everyone that ran.

Hi Girls - since I feel I've been out of circulation for ages and not had a good natter…….
I thought I'd have a ladies night at my house on Saturday 27th September, anytime from 7pm.
There will be food and drink, so bring nothing - although I thought some running photos from the past would bring back some happy memories - so bring some of those if you have any.
So if you'd like to come, drop me a wee note. I don't have all the ladies email addresses so please pass on to anyone I've missed. Everyone welcome! Hazel will be away back to Uni - so there will be a spare bed on offer if anyone wants to stop. We could also arrange a wee Sunday morning run too? Headaches permitting.

FINAL DAY WIN CLINCHES SECOND SPOT FOR ROBERT.
Club runners were again in fine form on the final weekend of the 2008 Highland Games season competeing at Pitlochry on Saturday and Thornton in Fife on Sunday.
At the latter, Robert Inglis new he had to get points on the board if he was to clinch the second spot in the Scottish Games Association season long points league for 1600/3200 metres events. Robert, in his first full season in the Open events, duly obliged, by taking the runners up spot in the 1600 and then starting from the backmark in the 3200 metres handicap, he readily picked off his rivals to take the victory he required breaking the winning tape in 10m 27.34 secs.
Darren Thomson reached the final of the Open 200 metres handicap where he finished 4th. Youth runners Lauren Arbuckle and Alice Horsburgh reaced the final of the Youth's 200 metres handicap where they finished 3rd and 6th respectively, Lauren was also 3rd in the Youth's 800 metres handicap.
On a day when every club athlete who competed won a prize Lana Turnbull also won the Sack Race beating all the boys in the process.
The previous day at Pitlochry where there was a huge entry of runners, Darren Thomson won his heat in the Open 90 metres handicap prior to being edged into third place in the final.
The three club runners in the Open 1600 metres handicap were all in the prizes, Sarah Inglis claimed the runner-up spot and she was followed over the line by Jill Horsburgh in 3rd and Robert Inglis in 5th.
There was a quality field for the SGA 1600 metres championship which is a scratch race, Robert Inglis ran well to finish 5th with victory going to Scotland's top ranked 1500 metres runner[3m44s] Chris McKay from Greenock.

As promised some details from the Ben Nevis Race.
Times for Lothian runners were Tosh Brannan 2.07, Davie Bell 2.20, Jim Alexander 2.46.
As you would expect it was a tough and rather gruelling race to say the least, a 1.30 min lung bursting ascent followed by a treacherous 50 min descent down rocky scree and slippery grass slope.
Once you got onto the tarmac road leading to the finish at Claggan Park you thought it would be a good run in - WRONG! - the legs went to jelly as you hit the road incorporating a big hipsway the longest mile I've ever run. All in all it was an enjoyable race - Jim and Tosh also enjoyed it.
Theresa McMenemy, Jim Salvage and Alistair Guy were also there in a spectating capacity giving us good support and some photos of the Race.

Sarah, Mhairi and Robert Inglis had a couple of very successful days on the Highland Games circuit competing at Oban on the 28th August and Birnam Saturday 30th August.
There are seperate races for the female athletes at Oban and Sarah claimed firsts in the 1000 metres, 1600metres and 3200metres, she was also runner up in the 800 metres. Her time of 2m 52.42 in the 1000 metres was a new Games record, she was also crowned the Argyllshire middle distance champion for 2008.
In the youth events at Oban Rachael McIlwraith won the 400 metres ,800 metres and was runner up in the 100 metres.
It was interesting to note the total prize money for the track and field events at Oban was £11,500, £3000 more than what was on offer at the Scottish Championships a couple of days later.
Robert and Mhairi Inglis were both winners at the Birnam Games in Perthshire, Mhairi claimed victory in the 800 metres handicap with Robert emulating that in the 1600 metres handicap. Robert also took part in the World Haggis eating championship, but this was one race he didn't win.

Ochils 2000s.
Updated: 25th August 2008
In the absence of any quality runners, I was the sole Lothian representative at long classic, and SHR championship counter, the Ochils 2000s, now running for it's second year.
Visibility was good and there was a big field so finding each of the 11 orienteering-style checkpoints on the summits was much easier than last year (although a small group of runners did manage to miss the turning onto the hill within half a mile of the start). No suprise that last years inaugural records were soundly thrashed (though not by me).
Colin Donnelly of Lochaber set a new record of 2 hours and 47 minutes while Angela Mudge ran the course in 2:51.
I managed a more modest 4 hours and 4 minutes, 24 minutes better than last year (all down to better route choice).
My lift, Andy Hemingway, only had to wait an hour or so for me to arrive after he finished - fortunately the meter wasn't running.
The nerd in me was particularly impressed to receive my splits at each hill, courtesy of the SI dibbers used - could be useful information to keep me on track if I try and break four hours next year. With the achievement of my 47th placing in the Bog and Burn (out of 48?) this season, I believe anything could be possible.

Lothian fielded two teams, and made strong contributions to a further two, in the 3 x 1 mile self-transcendence relays on 30th July. Scott Nelson, Stevie Laurie and Darren Thomas made up the eight-placed team (cumulative time 15:30) while Alice Horsburgh, Bethany Nelson, Marie McLaughlin and Lauren Arbuckle made third-placed all-junior girls team (21:10).
Sarah and Mhairi Inglis ran for the first-placed all female team (16:06), with Sarah notching up the quickest individual junior girls time (4:58).
Robert Inglis was quickest junior in 4:44, running for the inexplicably named 'team name' team.

The Arran Relay
Updated: 29th July 2008
Report from Jill Horsburgh...
A good time was had by all 6 Lothian runners, supporters, dogs and loved ones making the annual pilgrimage to Arran for the Round Arran Relay. Edel Mooney, Jim Alexander, Marie Storrie, Saran and Kenton Jones and myself made up the Lothian team and we all achieved respectable times on a surprisingly hot day (ask Jim about his sunburn!) As with all my favourite races there was loads of tea and sandwiches available while the officials collated the results. Overall the team finished 11th and were 2nd mixed team to Westerlands. As usual most of the contingent camped at Lamlash on the Saturday night although our hopes of sitting up till the early hours were thwarted by the midges and we were driven into the tents at a reasonable time.
Next morning Jim, Edel and Kenton were up first and out for a run along the shore (what happened to all the plans of Goat Fell before breakfast?). Saran, Susan (Bruce) and I went out a little later and dare I say it ran a little further , taking so long that the midges had gone away by the time we got back for breakfast. After packing up the tents we took a leisurely stroll up Glen Rosa with Sam, Zack and Kenton Jones and Alice Horsburgh braving the cold water of the rock pools.
Overall it was a great weekend. Special thanks must go to Kenton and to John Bruce for driving the bus. Can really recommend the race - in the usual post-race analysis we were all planning which leg we want to run next year (Edel is mad enough to want to do the hardest leg again!) and it looks like there's already one team committed - or should that read needs to be committed?

Wednesday night Bog and Burn
Updated: 23rd July 2008
A great result on a very warm evening for Alastair Robertson who finished 12th in the penultimate Bog and Burn fixture at Turnhouse. Alastair ran the course in 30:07, beating his clueless/shoeless chauffeur (who forgot to take appropriate footwear), by almost 5 minutes.
Having humiliated his driver so, Alastair is now looking for someone else to give him a lift to Caerketton on 13th August. The Caerketton hill race is short and sharp and perfectly suitable for our less wrinkly athletes.
Joking aside the chauffeur's wife has had enough of me disappearing every Wednesday night leaving her to put the kids to bed - and Alastairs Bog and Burn chances rest on finding another volunteer!
Special mention should go to Andy Kitchin and his two assistants, who organised a fantastic race. It was a short race that still packed a bit of everything, including bovine encounters.

Great results for Suzanne Swan and Scott Fraser

The Scottish Athletics results service seems to be on summer vacation at the moment, but Suzanne Swan won the Turiff 10K, in spite of the fact that 'she ran a rubbish time' (her words). No results are out but I can only assume that she is being modest.
Meanwhile Scott Fraser was 21st in the long event at the World Orienteering Champs in theCzech Republic on Sunday. A brilliant performance by a 22 year old first timer.
Martin tells me that our youngsters ran well in Forth Valley league at Grangemouth on Saturday but again no results as yet. More when they are out.

Herbie 3rd in class at Mull
Updated: 20th July 2008
Herbie McLean ran in the Isle of Mull Fell Race this weekend in 2 hours and fifty minutes. Sounds a long time for a medium but when you consider that Brian Marshall set a new course record yesterday in 1 hour and 46 minutes, you realise that this is no ordinary 8 mile race.
Herbie has competed in every single SHR championship fixture so far this year, and while potential winner, Tom Ross was absent, putting Herbie in a strong position in the current standings, Douglas Milligan is now looking a likely winner as he has been first M60 in each of the three races he has run (only 4 count towards the championship).
The next race in the series is the Ochils 2000 next month.
Well done Herbie!

Bonaly British/Irish Junior Hillrunning Championships
Updated: 17th July 2008
The British/Irish Junior Hillrunning Championships are to be held in Scotland on Sunday 12th October this year courtesy of a race organiser who has been behind one or two memorable events in recent years.
The races are to be held just off the Bypass on the Pentlands at Bonaly
The Championship races are open to any athlete of the specified age for each race.
There are U19, U16 and U14 events and there's even an open event for us old-timers (the only valid excuse for absence is the Pentland Skyline).
Competitors must be over 12 on race day.
If you have aspirations to represent Scotland, there is a trial on 21st September - get in contact with Martin for details.

Rachel McIlwraith second at Alva
Updated: 14th July 2008
The senior race was a BOFRA British Championship counter and so the field in both senior and junior races was of a high quality with lots up from England to compete. In spite of this, Rachel finished second female and, according to the BOFRA, was first local (on account of the fact that Bathgate is also in Scotland?).
The race itself as Rachel described it sounded like a typical BOFRA event - to quote SHR 'BOFRA specialise in brutally short, sharp, steep and rough hill races'!

Will Ramsbotham's bothy
Updated: 30th June 2008
Will Ramsbotham was a runner with the club 15 years ago, it would have been Livi then, until he was tragically killed in a climbing accident. Martin suggested restoring the bothy as a memorial to Will - it was halfway between WIll's family in Leeds and Edinburgh, where Will was at Uni. They did restore the bothy and it was all great for awhile but it was taken over by the Mountain Bothies Association and subsequently fell into disrepair. The MBA recently approached Martin after some time to say they might be able to help restore it and he organised the weekend to see what support remained, and set about trying to establish a trust to maintain the bothy as best they could.
The four that went down for the weekend (Martin, Calvin Crane, Alistair Robertson and Robin) were able to tidy the place up a bit, and the MBA have replaced the broken (vandalised) window but the future isn't certain for the bothy.
The bothy has a plaque beside the front door commemorating Will, which you can see in the photographs that Calvin took.

Red Moss Revolution - Barbeque night
Updated: 29th June 2008
While most enjoyed the barbeque at Beecraigs, Alistair, Tosh and myself selflessly elected to provide a three course meal for the midges at Red Moss. It was a beautiful evening and the turnout was good (both of runners and midges). Alistair went off quickly from the word go and that was the last we saw of him, while Tosh and myself started more conservatively - then in my case, finished conservatively too.
It was an easy course as hill runs go - I managed to run the whole thing, except for the steep and muddy decent of Hare hill, where I saw Tosh for the last time disappearing into the distance along with most of the rest of the field.
The results aren't out yet - there was some calamity with the timing (which can only have worked in my favour). There are, however, plently of photos on the SHR site and plenty of rather itchy red spots all over my legs (but don't worry - no photos of that).
If you have any news or photos from the barbeque, please send them on. I am told that Mary presented the XC prizes and that Mags organised the food brilliantly - very sorry to have missed it.

Dechmont Law 10K and Fun Run results
Updated: 9th June 2008
Results and Photos.
Great event, great weather, great prizes and great clootie dumpling (if we say so ourselves).
David Miller was the winner on the day with a very quick time of 32:10, well ahead of second placed Ben Cole, in spite of a slight detour at the end.
Susan Ridley was first Lady in 36:41. Jennifer Macmaster and Edel Mooney had a right battle at the end for second and third place!
Edel and Robin Galloway were fastest female/male club members on the day.
A stewards inquiry has ruled as groundless one competitors pathetic excuse that 'an encounter with a wee green extra-terrestrial' at the far end of the course cost him the four seconds that he needed to get a 'sub-40'.
In the Fun Run, the youngsters ensured that all parents made it back in one piece through the wild woods.
Unfortunately, we don't have sufficient photographic evidence of who had the biggest smile at the finish (if you do, let us know), so can't give you the official winner, but in terms of time taken, Alistair Robertson had a few seconds less fun than second placed Samuel Galloway.
Of the girls, Roisin Bonucchi was just over a minute behind Alistair.
Hope you enjoy the excellent photos taken by Richard and Peter - always nice to see yourself at your best, and I hope everyone enjoyed the event and will be back next year. Thanks to Mags, Martin, John, Susan and all the stewards that made it happen.
Please email Mags if you spot any errors, omissions or have any suggestions for improving the event.

Tiree 10k 2008
Updated: 6th June 2008
Now in its third year, the Tiree 10k once again attracted a select band from Lothian Running Club. Seven runners, with three supporters, made the lengthy journey to the west coast island and enjoyed a wonderful weekend of superb weather, beautiful scenery, grade A accommodation and a well organised, low key, fun event.
The event caters for runners of all standards, but also incorporates a 10k walk, a 4k and 2k run, and a ‘power push’ for parents (all mums in this case) with their youngsters in buggies. 10k runners are bussed across the island and they then enjoy a picturesque crossing of the island back to the finish, this year moved to the beach near the island’s community hall, ‘An Talla.’
The fatigue of looking after one of the supporters meant Christine had to call off taking part. Harry chased Doc’s 2007 course record and, although he didn’t get that, he finished second overall. Joyce was first lady, Mora second and Marcie third and Peter was first over 50 to complete a fair haul of trophies. Jack was too young to be in the trophies!
Official results and positions will follow as soon as I get them.

Lothian runners dominated the Deans Primary School 5K. Kenton Jones came in second in 18:43 and Richard (Doc) Docherty came in in 19:19, which isn't bad after his long lay-off from running. Exactly the same order as they finished when they breezed past me over 1500 metres last Friday at Craigswood - I wasn't there to be humiliated again. Lothian was well represented in the Ben Lomond junior races. Lana Turnbull and Rachael McIlwraith were fourth and fifth respectively in the FU16 class while Robert Inglis and Alistair Robertson were 3rd and fifth in the MU19 race.
Organiser Don Reid singles out Martin for particular thanks in his race report - he 'every year drives up from Livingston on the Friday to mark the junior course for me, then comes back the next day to help organise the races!'. Don also comments that hill running needs 'more fast young people'. Well there are some notable ones, such as second placed Andrew McCall, but without the efforts of people like Martin, we may not have so many in the future.

Scottish Orienteering League.
Updated: 11th May 2008
Apologies for going off topic but...
Sunday training was off today, so I had to find an alternative way to tire Eoin out. Rather than drive all the way to Ben Lomond for Eoin to tell me that he was bored, we decided that we would go and sample the exotic delights of Orienteering at Touch, in a Scottish Orienteering League Event organised by Stirling-based Forth Valley Orienteers.
On approaching the carpark, we saw strange figures in armoured gaiters running up the road to the mysteriously-named 'Far Start'. Very assuring when we met the one orienteer that we did know and he informed us that such kit was 'for wimps', before anxiously adding 'maybe they've run here before'. Eoin and his two year-old sister, sho is still in nappies and is far too young to be exposed to 'proper running' then set about the 'String Course' - a circuit of bailing twine covering a course of lumpy mud and rocky outcrops and punctuated by regular controls featuring pictures of Winnie the Pooh with punches to mark their similarly decorated cards. I'm sure that FVO have the full permission of Disney. Eoin completed the suprisingly gruelling string course in 11 minutes while his sister took twice as long, but amazingly really seemed to enjoy it. Perhaps I shouldn't have been to hasty in booking Eoin onto the easiest (white) of the real courses!
The real course was a slightly confusing affair to a beginner - I had to hire a 'dibber' and clear it at the start, before progressing through a series of squares and then finally being allowed to run the course. Eoin immediately instructed me that I was going too slowly but by half way around the 1.3km course had a stitch induced by downhill running and had himself to slow up a bit. All credit to him though - it was rather tougher than I had imagined (he would have been happy and still tired after just doing the 'String course' two or three times) - but even so managed to complete the course (OK - I read the map) in 21:28, the 13th (out of 19) quickest recorded time.
All in all a great experience that I would recommend - I'll definately be back. It is clearly a sport in which youth development is not an after-thought and as a result must have a bright future. Thanks to FVO for organising such an enjoyable and friendly event.

Dave Mumford made his debut in a (slightly oversized) Lothian vest at Dumyat, the second and the Bog and Burn series, running in just over 48 minutes.
John Coon who has run for the club once or twice before, ran in an hour and six minutes.
I also managed to get round myself without falling over or picking up any ticks, although some of those coming down behind me may have wondered what a rambler was doing on the course.
Shettleston's Jethro Lennox had recovered enough from his Three Peaks victory to win and Carnethys Angela Mudge was first lady.

Edinburgh to North Berwick Race Report (22 miles)
Updated: 4th May 2008
137 runners lined up in Meadowbank Stadium for the start of this years Edinburgh to North Berwick 22 mile race, a damp overcast day, a few spots of rain and with a slight southerly wind, the conditions were almost perfect for this years event. As the hooter went off the field quickly spread out as we headed around the track and out onto London Road. I last ran this race back in 2005 and had forgotten how well organised and supported this race is, by local residents and by family and friends of runners, some in cars many on bikes stopping off along the way helping to provide sustenance and to cheer us on, your support was fantastic. The views were fantastic along the way and there was plenty opportunity to view the Golfers Teeing off on Gullane Golf Course, I knew there was a reason beside the hill for slowing down at this point. Just after the sign for the" Museum of Flight", runners are directed left up a short “leg wobbling” climb into Direlton but you are quickly reward with a nice downhill section before you reach the 20 mile point.

133 runners successfully reached North Berwick within the 3hr 30min cut off. The Sun even made an appearance as we reached North Berwick, it probably made it a little too hot for the later finishers, not to mention the climb up the hill from the finish to the Sport Centre for our bags off the bus and a well deserved shower.  I would like to say a big thanks to all the Marshals, Organisers and Police that supported the event, it ran like clockwork and if anyone from the clubs is thinking of doing it next year from the date is set for the 2nd of May 2009, see you there.

Stuc a'Chroin
Updated: 3rd May 2008
Two Lothian runners completed Stuc a'Chroin, the first of the Long Classics series.
Local man Herbie MacLean ran in 03:22:38 (86th), while Matt Richardson (yours truly) finally made it in in 03:28:51 (96th). I lined up at the start with high hopes after my comparative success in my only previous long at the Ochils 2000s last year (mid-table obscurity) - this race proved to be a different beast.
The race starts easily enough, on smooth forest tracks and a slight uphill gradient. After about 20 minutes of running we came to a water station - something I have never encountered on a hill run before. Things were looking good. The route then turned more sharply up hill, first through trees and then onto the open hill and then another water station - and there were jelly babies on offer too at this one!
Next the descent into Glen Ample along rough path and heathery slopes and at the bottom - another water station!
The route then carried on up again to the steep slopes of Beinn Each. This was pretty hard going - a very steep and long ascent beside some rusty fenceposts and rusty wire in various degrees of concealment. Fortunately this is not the way you come down. The ascent soon led to - another water/confectionery station - I could get fat doing this.
It was on the descent that my shortcomings became very apparent as I dropped places rapidly. This is where the course differs from the Ochils where the descents are mostly gentle and muddy affairs. Up here, north of the highland boundary fault, the terrain seemed rougher and with my previous history of comedy falls (culminating in a broken arm a couple of years back), I gingerly minced down the slopes of Beinn Each to the col.
Not long after, Haddington's Brian Marshall, hotly pursued by Carnethy's Simon Peachey, came thundering down the hill in the opposite direction.
Next came the slog up Stuc A'Chroin itself (and another water station) - Herbie and myself reached the summit in roughly the same time (around 2 hours) but Herbie (I hope he doesn't mind me pointing out that he is twenty years my senior) gave me a lesson in descending and soon disappeared into the distance.
Eventually I did begin to feel like I was descending more freely, down the slippery traverse before Beinn Each (marked by a water station) and long rough paths into Glen Ample (and another couple of places lost), to the water station that I passed on the way out. Here, perhaps rightly sensing that there weren't too many more runners to go, they were trying to offload jelly babies like they were on commission. I helped out as best I could.
Next that small ascent north of Meall More and back to the forest - I had hoped to claw back a couple of places here but by this point my legs appeared to have taken on the consistency of all the jelly babies I had consumed - I laboured slowly and pathetically up to the next water station for my next instalment of Jelly babies, which I had now consumed a maternity wards worth of.
I still managed to drop one final place in the woods and on the track back before stumbling over the finish line to (apparently not ironic) applause and hot soup. In the end I thought it would take me about 3 and a half hours so in spite of my lowly placing, I was actually reasonably pleased with my time. It was an incredibly well supported race over a wonderful route. I even got race momentos of a coaster and a genuine Stuc a'Chroin sheep-tick.
I'm going to avoid the Jelly babies for a while though, at least until my next 'long', in which I intend to help Herbie navigate the man-eating peat hags of Blairdennon hill (if he hasn't dropped me by then).
The overall winner was Brian Marshall in around 2:15.

Highland Fling 2008
Updated: 28th April 2008
I haven't heard from Mag's, Jim and David on how they are feeling after their exertions on Saturday, but they have all achieved Super Human Status by completing this years 53 Mile, Highland Fling Race from Milngavie to Tyndrum (long way for a pub crawl). As Fling Runners and Relay runners lined together on the start line there was 137 starters this year a big step up from the original 18 runners that lined up at the start of the inaugural event in 2006.

The weather was very changeable, at times it was miserable with heavy rain and the cold wind didn't make it very pleasurable for the spectators. But by lunch time the clouds had parted and that rare sight of blue skys and sunshine appeared setting up better weather conditions for runners and spectators alike for the second half of the race.

David was the first runner in, finishing in 22nd place in 9hrs, 59mins and 46secs, a sprint finish to the end was required to duck under the 10hrs, what a great result, well done. Jim finished in 96th place along side Mags in 99 place both with the time of 14hrs and 9mins, many congratulations to you both for finishing such a tough race.

Mark Kassyk, Marie Storrie, Andrew Kitchin and myself represented the club in the Relay Race, despite running shorter legs the pressure was still on against the other Replay Teams. We finished 3rd out of the 4 Mixed Relay Teams in a time of 8hrs, 59mins and the all important 21 secs. Despite the weather conditions we all agreed it was a really great event, very well organised and many of us will probably be back again next year.

So if you are interested in running 53 miles or want to participate in the Relay Team event, then mark the 27th of April 2009 in your diary, I am happy to coordinate the relay teams for next year so if interested drop me a line. Congratulations again to everyone and a big thank you to the organisers, marshals and spectators for their support. I have posted a few photos that I took on the website, but if anyone one else has photo's from the event and would like me to post them then please email them to me at rmoir50@hotmail.com

The Highland Fling - 26th April - Relay Team(s) Wanted
Updated: 31st Mar 2008
Three club members (Jim Alexander, Davie Bell and myself) have entered this 53 mile ultra-marathon on Saturday 26th April. The object is to complete the course along the southern section of the West Highland Way, from Milngavie to Tyndrum, within the 15 hour time limit. The race starts early (6am) and transport can be arranged to take runners back to the start at the end of the day.
The race organiser would like to introduce 4-person relay teams to this year's event and has asked Fling entrants if they could pursuade their respective Club's to enter a team. Each relay person would effectively run a half-marathon, over one of the most scenic off-road routes in Scotland. There are no cut-off times for reaching the checkpoints, just the overall 15 hour time limit to get to Tyndrum. The Fling is a low-key friendly event and superbly organised. If you've ever fancied running an off-road half-marathon, you won't find better.

If you would like to be part of a relay team (the three mentioned above are running solo), get in touch as soon as possible and I'll give you more details. So far Richard Moir has thrown his hat into the ring as a possible team member, so we just need three more for a team. Take a look on the Fling website to find out more. www.highlandflingrace.org

Normans Law
Updated: 22nd Mar 2008
Alastair Robertson and myself (plus another two Linlithgow runners) made the journey up to Luthrie for the Fife AC organised Normans Law hill race. With just 700 metres of ascent over the five mile course, it promised to be more of a 'runners' race than most hill events and with dry conditions underfoot, it looked like Alastairs choice of trail shoes was a good compromise.
The course started off with gentle climbs on wide tracks and then narrow footpaths where overtaking options were limited (not that it stopped Alastair from gaining a few paces). The route then levelled off before turning north, steeply up Normans Law. The last part of the ascent was over true hill terrain and we were all reduced to walking. At this point I could see Alastair wasn't too far ahead of me as he reached the summit, but he pulled away from me (as did most of the rest of the runners around me, courtesy of my pathetic descending skills), as we dropped down the rough descent back east (where any route back was permissable).
The descent then became more gentle and I was able to hold my position in the field again, back to the finish, for cups of hot tea and genuine Fife AC home baking.
I was delighted with my finishing time of 37:37, but Alastair will be even more pleased, having completed his longest hill run to date, almost two minutes ahead of me (35:50) and picking up the U18 Junior prize - a fine selection of Easter confectioneries. Another great result emphasising yet again the wealth of fantastic junior talent that we have in the club.
Thanks to Graham Bennison for organising a brilliant event, which I would recommend to anyone who wants to dip their toes in the relatively shallow end of hill running.

Gartmorn 6
Updated: 11th Mar 2008
Lothian runners were out in force at Gartmorn with 10 entrants in the senior race and 6 in the junior. The rain which had been forecast stayed away long enough for the majority of the field to cross the finish line and start on the sandwiches and cakes. The female contingent did particularly well with Lana Turnbull winning the girls race and senior/veteran women taking 3 of the 5 women's prizes on offer. Special mention must go to Saran Jones was 4th woman (and first SV) in her first race for 2 years (all that rest must pay off), and to Jim Alexander who didn't win any prizes but still managed to finish in just over 42 minutes after running 29 miles the previous day as part of his West Highland Way training (perhaps rest isn't such a good idea).
A great day out and almost as good as the Lothian trail race.
Jill
Prize winners were (Senior race) Saran Jones (1st SV), Marie Storrie and Margo Welsh (2nd and 3rd F). In the junior race, Lana Turnbull (1st F), Alastair Robertson (2nd), Austin Storrie (2nd MU13) and Marie McLaughlin (2nd FU13).

Arran Relays - Saturday 26th July 2008
Updated: 15 Feb 2008

Advanced notice of the Club's annual trip to the seaside.
I've organised this weekend for the last few years but will struggle to do it this year since I am on holiday first 2 weeks of July then in Ireland the weekend of the Relays.
So, anyone prepared to organise this year's trip? I'll gladly forward my "to do" list and will be on hand for any help and advice required.
I spoke to the organiser this week and again we'll only be guaranteed one team entry. We have been lucky enough to be allowed a second team every year because I bring the minibus and help with relay transfers. So, without the minibus we may not get a second team entered.
Anyone fancy taking the West Lothian Council minibus test? It is a simple, short driving test, only takes around 30 mins, and no theory required. It is just like driving a big estate car! The Club are desperately short of licensed minibus drivers for other club outings, so if you can help, let me know and I'll put the "wheels in motion".
Contact me on 01506 418866 or email me.

Road Relay Championships, 5th April 2008
Updated: 15 Feb 2008

This is the 11th consecutive year that our club has hosted this event in Livingston. The event will take place, starting and finishing, at St. Margaret’s Academy and to help make this day as successful as those of previous years, we need your help - help with various jobs on the day, for example, with Marshalling, setting up the course, parking duties and, of course, running in the event itself. If you can help in any way there is a sign-up sheet for both volunteers and for runners at the club.
Entries – This race is open to over 17 year olds and who are members of Scottish Athletics. Starts time is 12 noon. The club enters you. The price is paid for each team entered, whether and we submit names of six possible runners, or twenty. So, please put your name down, even if you are not sure, but remember to let us know as soon as you can if you can run, one way or the other. We have to post entries on 19th March so please sign up before that date. This event uses Livingston’s attractive and safe footpath network and is run over alternate 3 mile and 6 mile legs. For the Ladies: teams of four and for the Men: teams of six. We will enter teams for as many people that want to run. The more the merrier.
If we have a lot of entrants, we sometimes try and pick a top A team and then make the other teams as equal as possible. It helps us to select for this if runners take part in a “trial” from the Livi Inn before this event. But you do not have to do the trial.
Thank You,
Jim Savage

Festive Frolicks - 26th December
Updated: 28 Dec 2007
The Festive Handicap and Cockleroy Chaser were enjoyed (and by Tosh, endured) by all in breezy conditions at Beecraigs on Boxing day. The results to both events are here.

Mags Turnbull and Martin Hyman had the following to say...

A big thanks to Pete West and family for all their work putting together another great Festive Frolicks. Not forgetting Martin, fresh out of hospital, for putting on the kids race, Marsie and Jack for their hospitality and fab home made soup and all the cheery marshalls - and to top it off.... it's FREE! Can you believe it?
Mags

Congratulations to all who took part with a smile. To Matthew for breaking the record of his elder brother Christopher by one second, and to his younger brother Sam, for a remarkable time for a 9 year old.
Laura Van Kreiken improved her record by seven seconds to retain her title, but Lauren Arbuckle improved ten seconds to finish only one second behind.
At the end you may think that Molly and Sam Dudchenko, aged four and two respectively, were probably carried round. But not a bit of it. It was great to see them finishing like a train, under their own steam. It is never too early to start to enjoy our great sport.
Thanks also to all helped, including Bob, the International Amateur Athletic Federation prize judge and to Tosh the top. Also to the remarkable volunteer who wrote down all the results. Thanks also to young Conor Anderson who helped with certificates.

Your Club Needs You
Updated: 5 Nov 2007
As the annual AGM is approaching we need more punters to help with the committee. For this task you will get to sit will beautiful ladies approx once a month or male beefcakes depending what you prefer. Plus Mary Ingils’  Jaffa Cake Bars! The more people we have the easier it is to divvy up the tasks we have, such as, driving the big yellow mini bus, handing out race numbers, holding jackets, possibly some computer work or helping put a tick in the correct box for those that are unsure when filling out entry forms. If some people aren’t sure about the duties involved please speak to any present committee member and we could give you an insight into these meetings behind closed doors and what we do.

The AGM is on the Wed 21st of Nov, Group runs start at 6pm (meet at the Inveralmond Community High School Reception, a guided run for the young folk is provided too), AGM starts at 7pm, fun and food at approx 8.15pm and kicking out time is 9.30. Hope to see you all there.

LRC AGM - Wed 21st Nov at 7pm - Inveralmond High School
Updated: 23 Oct 2007
Most folk hear the words "AGM" and go into hiding.... Our Club's AGM differs from many others. It is a celebration of the past year's achievements. Our President is wading his way through the many exploits and adventures of the fun runner and serious athlete that makes up this lovely Club, to bring you some highlights from the past year. Not only that, in one corner we have a slide show with hundreds of photos from various events that club members have participated in. In the other, a feast fit for a King (if everyone could bring an item of finger food for the buffet, perhaps some juice, then there WILL be a feast).

OK, we do have the routine business to get through first; posts to fill and helpers to find, but this is a great chance to get together for a blether, a bite and a trip down memory lane.

Group runs start at 6pm (meet at the Community Reception, a guided run for the young folk is provided too), AGM starts at 7pm, fun and food at approx 8.15pm and kicking out time is 9.30. Hope to see you all there.

East District XC League Livingston
Updated: 21 Oct 2006

It was great to see so many athletes, turn up on Saturday to support the 1st Meeting for the 2006 of the East District XC League. Despite a few showers of rain it didn't dampen the spirit of everyone that took part.
We saw some great individual performances from a number of our club member including Edel Mooney winning the Woman's race in 21:17 and Mhairi and Sarah Inglis coming in 1st and 2nd respectively in the U17 Woman's Race, well done to you both and to everyone else that competed on Saturday you all did very well.

I would also like to thank all the volunteers that helped out on Saturday to help set out the course, marshal the runners, time keep etc etc. without you this event would not have been the success it was

I also managed to get some decent photo's off you all, check them out in the updated Gallery Page.

Diet Coke or a Bottle of Beer?
27June 2006
Looks like club members had a busy weekend representing the club at various local events, including the Milnathort 5 Mile RR, Portobello 4Mile RR, The Black Rock 5 and the Diet Coke 10K & Half Marathon.

I think the Black Rock 5 was the most popular by far with over 10 LRC members taking part, then again I'm not surprised as apparently there was the alcoholic temptation of a bottle of beer at the finish for all over 18's, beats Diet Coke any day !!.

Milnathort Dash 5 Mile Road Race - Thursday 22nd June
-Jim Alexander 37mins 27 secs

Portobello 4 Mile Road Race - Thursday 22nd June
-David Mabon 26mins 15 secs
-Black Rock 5 - Friday 23rd June
-Ross Milne 23mins 56secs

Trial Night Report
16 June 2006
We had a great attendance at the Trial Night on Friday Night, we witnessed some great competition from the <13s in the 50M & 300M Sprints and also in the Foam Javelin, followed by some great performances from the >13s in the 1500M, which also saw the return of Ian Donnan to the club who managed to squeeze in a 4min 06sec for this event. The entertainment for the evening was provided by Darren Thomson who's technique over the High Jump reminded everyone of a "Human Cannon Ball". Well done to everyone that took part and a big thank you to all the helpers, without you we would not be able to run these Trial Nights.
