Robert Inglis and Rachael McIlwraith ran at Scolty, the second of the three

Both Robert and Rachael are now second in their groups overall, so not to much pressure for the final fixture

Tiree 10k 2008
Updated: 6th June 2008
Now in its third year, the Tiree 10k once
again attracted a select band from Lothian Running Club. Seven runners,
with three supporters, made the lengthy journey to the west coast island and
enjoyed a wonderful weekend of superb weather, beautiful scenery, grade A
accommodation and a well organised, low key, fun event.
The event caters for runners of all standards, but also incorporates a 10k walk,
a 4k and 2k run, and a ‘power push’ for parents (all mums in this case) with their
youngsters in buggies. 10k runners are bussed across the island and they then enjoy
a picturesque crossing of the island back to the finish, this year moved to the
beach near the island’s community hall, ‘An Talla.’
The fatigue of looking after one of the supporters meant Christine had to call off
taking part. Harry chased Doc’s 2007 course record and, although he didn’t get that,
he finished second overall. Joyce was first lady, Mora second and Marcie third and
Peter was first over 50 to complete a fair haul of trophies. Jack was too young to
be in the trophies!
Official results and positions will follow as soon as I get them.

Cape Wrath Challenge
Updated: 5th June 2008
Just thought you would like to see some pictures from the recent Cape Wrath Challenege where Mags Turnbull, Jim Alexander,
Alan Robertson and myself ran the Cape Wrath Marathon on Saturday 17th May '08.
Unusually the weather was sunny for the marathon and for the running events held earlier in the week in which Alan took part in.
The marathon is a long, hilly 26 miles along the service road to the lighthouse and back to the village hall.
Later in the evening, we are generously fed with local produce followed by ceilidh dancing into the wee hours.
Mags received a crystal prize for being first lady in her category.

Deans Primary School 5K
Updated: 27th May 2008
Lothian runners dominated the Deans Primary School 5K. Alistair Robertson
came in first in a fantastically quick 18:22 (he confided in me that he was hoping for under 19:30,
so hopefully he'll be happy with that). Kenton Jones came in second in 18:43 and Richard (Doc) Docherty came in
in 19:19, which isn't bad after his long lay-off from running. Exactly the same order as they finished when they breezed past
me over 1500 metres last Friday at Craigswood - I wasn't there to be humiliated again. David Mabon and Alan Robertson were 4th
and fifth in just over 20 minutes while Carol Mabon was 26th in 26 minutes. Well done to everyone.

A number of Lothian runners made the journey over to Tiree for the 10K

weather, though Argyll and Bute council have not confirmed rumours that Tiree is to be twinned with Ayia Napa.
The photos are courtesy of Jack Ewing and a mystery Tiree resident who handed them over on a coded CD in a covert

Dechmont Law 10K Trail Race and 2.5K Fun Run
Updated: 12th May 2008
REMINDER REMINDER REMINDER.........
Just another reminder of this year's event taking place on Sunday the 8th June.
We are still looking for volunteers and helpers (and runners) to make this a success again this year - so first of all,
if you want to enter the race, you can download an entry form from the website.
It would be great if you pre-entered since it gives our results team less work to do on the day!
Secondly, if you don't want to run, would you consider helping out?
We have a multitude of jobs on offer, from marking the course to marshalling, compiling results to giving
out spot prizes.
If you can help, let me know asap
Lastly, I'm trying to get as many spot prizes as possible so that those runners, who make up the bulk of
the field but never make the prize list, can go home with a little surprise.
If anyone would like to donate something that could be added to my spot prize pile, I'd be delighted.

Lothian was well represented in the Ben Lomond junior races.
Lana Turnbull and Rachael McIlwraith were fourth and fifth respectively in the FU16 class
while Robert Inglis and Alistair Robertson were 3rd and fifth in the MU19 race.
Organiser Don Reid singles out Martin for particular thanks in his race report - he 'every year drives up from Livingston on the Friday to mark the junior course
for me, then comes back the next day to help organise the races!'. Don also comments that
hill running needs 'more fast young people'. Well there are some notable ones, such as second placed
Andrew McCall, but without the efforts of people like Martin, we may not have so many in the future.
If anyone who was actually there wants to comment on the race, please email Matt Richardson (via email
supplied on the contacts page) and I'll publish... Full results

Scottish Orienteering League.
Updated: 11th May 2008
Apologies for going off topic but...
Sunday training was off today, so I had to find an alternative way to tire Eoin out.
Rather than drive all the way to Ben Lomond for Eoin to tell me that he was bored, we
decided that we would go and sample the exotic delights of Orienteering at Touch, in a
Scottish Orienteering League Event organised by Stirling-based Forth Valley Orienteers.
On approaching the carpark, we saw strange figures in armoured gaiters running up the road to
the mysteriously-named 'Far Start'. Very assuring when we met the one orienteer that we did know and
he informed us that such kit was 'for wimps', before anxiously adding 'maybe they've run here before'.
Eoin and his two year-old sister, sho is still in nappies and is far too young to be exposed to 'proper
running' then set about the 'String Course' - a circuit of bailing twine covering a course of lumpy mud
and rocky outcrops and punctuated by regular controls featuring pictures of Winnie the Pooh with punches
to mark their similarly decorated cards. I'm sure that FVO have the full permission of Disney. Eoin completed
the suprisingly gruelling string course in 11 minutes while his sister took twice as long, but amazingly
really seemed to enjoy it. Perhaps I shouldn't have been to hasty in booking Eoin onto the easiest (white) of the real courses!
The real course was a slightly confusing affair to a beginner - I had to hire a 'dibber' and clear it at the start, before
progressing through a series of squares and then finally being allowed to run the course. Eoin immediately instructed me
that I was going too slowly but by half way around the 1.3km course had a stitch induced by downhill running
and had himself to slow up a bit. All credit to him though - it was rather tougher than I had imagined (he would have
been happy and still tired after just doing the 'String course' two or three times) - but even so managed to complete the
course (OK - I read the map) in 21:28, the 13th (out of 19) quickest recorded time.
All in all a great experience that I would recommend - I'll definately be back. It is clearly a sport in which
youth development is not an after-thought and as a result must have a bright future. Thanks
to FVO for organising such an enjoyable and friendly event.

Dumyat and Fiddlers
Updated: 7th May 2008
Dave Mumford made his debut in a (slightly oversized)
Lothian vest at Dumyat, the second and the Bog and Burn series, running in just over 48 minutes.
John Coon who has run for the club once or twice before, ran in an hour and six minutes.
I also managed to get round myself without falling over or picking up any ticks,
although some of those coming down behind me may have wondered what a rambler was
doing on the course.
Shettleston's Jethro Lennox had recovered enough from his Three Peaks victory to win
and Carnethys Angela Mudge was first lady.
Some readers of a more sensitive disposition may find these images disturbing.

Edinburgh to North Berwick Race Report (22 miles)
Updated: 4th May 2008
137 runners lined up in Meadowbank Stadium for the start of this years Edinburgh to North Berwick 22 mile race, a damp overcast day, a few spots of rain and with a slight southerly wind, the conditions were almost perfect for this years event. As the hooter went off the field quickly spread out as we headed around the track and out onto London Road. I last ran this race back in 2005 and had forgotten how well organised and supported this race is, by local residents and by family and friends of runners, some in cars many on bikes stopping off along the way helping to provide sustenance and to cheer us on, your support was fantastic. The views were fantastic along the way and there was plenty opportunity to view the Golfers Teeing off on Gullane Golf Course, I knew there was a reason beside the hill for slowing down at this point. Just after the sign for the" Museum of Flight", runners are directed left up a short “leg wobbling” climb into Direlton but you are quickly reward with a nice downhill section before you reach the 20 mile point.
133 runners successfully reached North Berwick within the 3hr 30min cut off. The Sun even made an appearance as we reached North Berwick, it probably made it a little too hot for the later finishers, not to mention the climb up the hill from the finish to the Sport Centre for our bags off the bus and a well deserved shower. I would like to say a big thanks to all the Marshals, Organisers and Police that supported the event, it ran like clockwork and if anyone from the clubs is thinking of doing it next year from the date is set for the 2nd of May 2009, see you there.

Stuc a'Chroin
Updated: 3rd May 2008
Two Lothian runners completed Stuc a'Chroin, the first of the Long Classics series.
Local man Herbie MacLean ran in 03:22:38 (86th),
while Matt Richardson (yours truly) finally made it in in 03:28:51 (96th).
I lined up at the start with high hopes after my comparative success in my only previous
long at the Ochils 2000s last year (mid-table obscurity) - this race proved to be a different beast.
The race starts easily enough, on smooth forest tracks and a slight uphill gradient. After about 20
minutes of running we came to a water station - something I have never encountered on a hill run before.
Things were looking good. The route then turned more sharply up hill, first through trees and then onto the
open hill and then another water station - and there were jelly babies on offer too at this one!
Next the descent into Glen Ample along rough path and heathery slopes and at the bottom - another water station!
The route then carried on up again to the steep slopes of Beinn Each. This was pretty hard going - a very steep and
long ascent beside some rusty fenceposts and rusty wire in various degrees of concealment. Fortunately this is not
the way you come down. The ascent soon led to - another water/confectionery station - I could get fat doing this.
It was on the descent that my shortcomings became very apparent as I dropped places rapidly. This is where the course
differs from the Ochils where the descents are mostly gentle and muddy affairs. Up here, north of the highland boundary
fault, the terrain seemed rougher and with my previous history of comedy falls (culminating in a broken arm a couple of
years back), I gingerly minced down the slopes of Beinn Each to the col.
Not long after, Haddington's Brian Marshall, hotly pursued by Carnethy's Simon Peachey,
came thundering down the hill in the opposite direction.
Next came the slog up Stuc A'Chroin itself (and another water station) - Herbie and myself reached the summit in roughly the
same time (around 2 hours) but Herbie (I hope he doesn't mind me pointing out that he is twenty years my senior) gave me a lesson
in descending and soon disappeared into the distance.
Eventually I did begin to feel like I was descending more freely, down the slippery traverse before Beinn Each
(marked by a water station) and long rough paths into Glen Ample (and another couple of places lost), to the
water station that I passed on the way out. Here, perhaps rightly sensing that there weren't too many more runners
to go, they were trying to offload jelly babies like they were on commission. I helped out as best I could.
Next that small ascent north of Meall More and back to the forest - I had hoped to claw back a couple of places here but
by this point my legs appeared to have taken on the consistency of all the jelly babies I had consumed - I laboured
slowly and pathetically up to the next water station for my next instalment of Jelly babies, which I had now consumed
a maternity wards worth of.
I still managed to drop one final place in the woods and on the track back before stumbling over the finish line
to (apparently not ironic) applause and hot soup. In the end I thought it would take me about 3 and a half hours so
in spite of my lowly placing, I was actually reasonably pleased with my time. It was an incredibly well supported race
over a wonderful route.
I even got race momentos of a coaster and a genuine Stuc a'Chroin sheep-tick.
I'm going to avoid the Jelly babies for a while though, at least until my next 'long', in which I intend to help Herbie
navigate the man-eating peat hags of Blairdennon hill (if he hasn't dropped me by then).
The overall winner was Brian Marshall in around 2:15.

Highland Fling 2008
Updated: 28th April 2008
I haven't heard from Mag's, Jim and David on how they are feeling after their exertions on Saturday, but they have all achieved Super Human Status by completing this years 53 Mile, Highland Fling Race from Milngavie to Tyndrum (long way for a pub crawl). As Fling Runners and Relay runners lined together on the start line there was 137 starters this year a big step up from the original 18 runners that lined up at the start of the inaugural event in 2006.
The weather was very changeable, at times it was miserable with heavy rain and the cold wind didn't make it very pleasurable for the spectators. But by lunch time the clouds had parted and that rare sight of blue skys and sunshine appeared setting up better weather conditions for runners and spectators alike for the second half of the race.
David was the first runner in, finishing in 22nd place in 9hrs, 59mins and 46secs, a sprint finish to the end was required to duck under the 10hrs, what a great result, well done. Jim finished in 96th place along side Mags in 99 place both with the time of 14hrs and 9mins, many congratulations to you both for finishing such a tough race.
Mark Kassyk, Marie Storrie, Andrew Kitchin and myself represented the club in the Relay Race, despite running shorter legs the pressure was still on against the other Replay Teams. We finished 3rd out of the 4 Mixed Relay Teams in a time of 8hrs, 59mins and the all important 21 secs. Despite the weather conditions we all agreed it was a really great event, very well organised and many of us will probably be back again next year.
So if you are interested in running 53 miles or want to participate in the Relay Team event, then mark the 27th of April 2009 in your diary, I am happy to coordinate the relay teams for next year so if interested drop me a line. Congratulations again to everyone and a big thank you to the organisers, marshals and spectators for their support. I have posted a few photos that I took on the website, but if anyone one else has photo's from the event and would like me to post them then please email them to me at rmoir50@hotmail.com

Highland Fling 2008
Updated: 17th April 2008
Three brave club members Mags Turnball, Jim Alexander, David Bell are taking part in this years Highland Fling, a 53 mile Ultra Marathon following an off road course along the south section of the West Highland Way from Milngavie to Tyndrum. It all kicks off at 6am Saturday 26th of April and they have 15 hours to complete this mammoth distance, wishing them the best of luck on the day.
Not to feel left out I will be joining them this year along with Mark Kassyk, Marie Storrie and Andrew Kitchin as part of the Lothian Running Club Relay Team to compete in the relay event, against a number of other local clubs. The Relay Event will follow the same route starting at 6am at Milngavie with Relay change over points at Drymen, Rowardennan, and Beinglas Farm finishing in Tyndrum late afternoon. London Marathon 2008
Updated: 17th April 2008
Well it was day of high expectation as Suzanne Swan, Mike Donald and myself nervously stood on the start line of this years Flora London Marathon, as the pathetic hooter sounded at 9:45 we were finally off, Everyone started off well negotiating the usual busy start before we could get into our running around 3 miles, unfortunately we all had our problems on the day suffering sore legs, injury and running out of sustenance and with mixed weather conditions enroute we all unfortunately failed to achieve our goals.
Suzanne came in first with 3hrs 37mins, myself finished in 3hrs 57mins just dipping under the 4hr mark and Mike despite several injuries finished in 4hrs 15mins.Oh well that's marathon running for you, and there is always next year, can't believe I just said that. Check out the full results on the FLM Website.

Dechmont Law 10K Trail Race and 2.5K Fun Run
Updated: 17th April 2008
This year's event takes place on 8th June.
We need lots of helpers (and runners) to make this a success again this year - so first of all,
if you want to enter the race, you can download an entry form from the website.

The Highland Fling - 26th April - Relay Team(s) Wanted
Updated: 31st Mar 2008
Three club members (Jim Alexander, Davie Bell and myself) have
entered this 53 mile ultra-marathon on Saturday 26th April. The object is to complete the
course along the southern section of the West Highland Way, from Milngavie to Tyndrum,
within the 15 hour time limit. The race starts early (6am) and transport can be arranged to
take runners back to the start at the end of the day.
The race organiser would like to introduce 4-person relay teams to this year's event and has
asked Fling entrants if they could pursuade their respective Club's to enter a team.
Each relay person would effectively run a half-marathon, over one of the most scenic off-road
routes in Scotland. There are no cut-off times for reaching the checkpoints, just the overall
15 hour time limit to get to Tyndrum. The Fling is a low-key friendly event and superbly
organised. If you've ever fancied running an off-road half-marathon, you won't find better.
If you would like to be part of a relay team (the three mentioned above are running solo), get
in touch as soon as possible and I'll give you more details. So far Richard Moir has thrown his hat into the ring
as a possible team member, so we just need three more for a team.
Take a look on the Fling website to find out more. www.highlandflingrace.org

Normans Law
Updated: 22nd Mar 2008
Alastair Robertson and myself (plus another two Linlithgow runners) made the journey up to Luthrie for
the Fife AC organised Normans Law hill race. With just 700 metres of ascent over the five mile course,
it promised to be more of a 'runners' race than most hill events and with dry conditions underfoot, it looked
like Alastairs choice of trail shoes was a good compromise.
The course started off with gentle climbs on wide tracks and then narrow footpaths where overtaking
options were limited (not that it stopped Alastair from gaining a few paces). The route then levelled off before
turning north, steeply up Normans Law. The last part of the ascent was over true hill terrain and
we were all reduced to walking. At this point I could see Alastair wasn't too far ahead of me as he
reached the summit, but he pulled away from me (as did most of the rest of the runners around me,
courtesy of my pathetic descending skills), as we dropped down the rough descent back east (where any route
back was permissable).
The descent then became more gentle and I was able to hold my position in the field again, back to
the finish, for cups of hot tea and genuine Fife AC home baking.
I was delighted with my finishing time of 37:37, but Alastair will be even more pleased, having completed his longest
hill run to date, almost two minutes ahead of me (35:50) and picking up the U18 Junior prize - a fine selection
of Easter confectioneries. Another great result emphasising yet again the wealth of fantastic junior talent
that we have in the club.
Thanks to Graham Bennison for organising a brilliant event, which I would recommend to anyone who wants to dip their
toes in the relatively shallow end of hill running.

Edinburgh Half Marathon
Updated: 19th Mar 2008
A select handful of Lothian runners competed in Edinburgh on Sunday.
Normally a flat course with a following wind, on Sunday the wind was against them
all the way along the shore from Crammond to Musselburgh.
Scott Balfour was first in the M60 category (a blistering 01:23:43) which also put him second overall in
the WMA rankings (adjusted time of 1:07:53, though don't ask me how it's calculated).
Steven Laurie was our fastest runner overall (01:22:21), with Scott Nelson (senior) also
breaking 1:30 (01:25:12) and Graham McIntyre (01:31:32), Alan Robertson (01:35:22) and
Lucy Galloway (01:38:17) all under 1:40.

Trials for the Road Relay
Updated: 17th Mar 2008
On Wednesday week (26th) the club training consists of a "Trial" for our teams for the
Scottish Road Relay Champs on April 5th. It is not really a trial because everyone who signs
up gets a run anyway, but it does help us sort team composition. The start is at the Livi Inn
and whoever goes there after is the selection committee.
Basically there are 3 runs on offer
- 3k junior fun run with guide, with a bit off the 4k course
- 4k Senior run.
- 5k Trial over 4k course plus 1k extra
Fun runs start at 7.25 or when ready. Trial at 7.30

Chapelgill
Updated: 16th Mar 2008
A good turnout for the demanding Chapelgill (with more ascent per kilometer than any other in Scotland)
and the junior races.
Rachael McIlwraith was second female, not too far behind winner Eilidh Wardlaw of HBT.
Alastair Robertson finished just ahead front of Rachael - which isn't a bad effort after
winning the Congrie Conga junior race just minutes before!
Also in the Congrie Conga, which was dominated by Lothian juniors, Lauren Arbuckle,
Marie McLaughlin and Bethany Nelson all improved on last years times. Alice Horsburgh
and Scott Nelson ran the race for the first time - Scott must be the fastest 6 year
old on the hill running circuit!
In the half Conga, Molly McGiffen was the winner.
Well done to all.

Gartmorn 6
Updated: 11th Mar 2008
Lothian runners were out in force at Gartmorn with 10 entrants in
the senior race and 6 in the junior. The rain which had been forecast stayed
away long enough for the majority of the field to cross the finish line and
start on the sandwiches and cakes. The female contingent did particularly well
with Lana Turnbull winning the girls race and senior/veteran women taking 3
of the 5 women's prizes on offer.
Special mention must go to Saran Jones was 4th woman (and first SV) in her first
race for 2 years (all that rest must pay off),
and to Jim Alexander who didn't win any prizes but still managed to finish in
just over 42 minutes after running 29 miles the previous day as part of his West
Highland Way training (perhaps rest isn't such a good idea).
A great day out and almost as good as the Lothian trail race.
Jill
Prize winners were (Senior race) Saran Jones (1st SV), Marie Storrie and Margo Welsh (2nd and 3rd F).
In the junior race, Lana Turnbull (1st F), Alastair Robertson (2nd), Austin Storrie (2nd MU13)
and Marie McLaughlin (2nd FU13).

Arran Relays - Saturday 26th July 2008
Updated: 15 Feb 2008
Advanced notice of the Club's annual trip to the seaside.
I've organised this weekend for the last few years but will struggle to
do it this year since I am on holiday first 2 weeks of July then in
Ireland the weekend of the Relays.
So, anyone prepared to organise this year's trip? I'll gladly forward
my "to do" list and will be on hand for any help and advice required.
I spoke to the organiser this week and again we'll only be guaranteed one team entry.
We have been lucky enough to be allowed a second team every year because I
bring the minibus and help with relay transfers.
So, without the minibus we may not get a second team entered.
Anyone fancy taking the West Lothian Council minibus test?
It is a simple, short driving test, only takes around 30 mins, and no theory required.
It is just like driving a big estate car!
The Club are desperately short of licensed minibus drivers for other club outings,
so if you can help, let me know and I'll put the "wheels in motion".
Contact me on 01506 418866 or email me.

Road Relay Championships, 5th April 2008
Updated: 15 Feb 2008
This is the 11th consecutive year that our club
has hosted this event in Livingston. The event
will take place, starting and finishing, at St.
Margaret’s Academy and to help make this day
as successful as those of previous years, we
need your help - help with various jobs on the
day, for example, with Marshalling, setting up
the course, parking duties and, of course,
running in the event itself. If you can help in
any way there is a sign-up sheet for both
volunteers and for runners at the club.
Entries – This race is open to over 17 year olds
and who are members of Scottish Athletics.
Starts time is 12 noon. The club enters you. The
price is paid for each team entered, whether
and we submit names of six possible runners,
or twenty. So, please put your name down, even
if you are not sure, but remember to let us know
as soon as you can if you can run, one way or
the other. We have to post entries on 19th March
so please sign up before that date. This event
uses Livingston’s attractive and safe footpath
network and is run over alternate 3 mile and 6
mile legs. For the Ladies: teams of four and for
the Men: teams of six. We will enter teams for
as many people that want to run. The more the
merrier.
If we have a lot of entrants, we sometimes try
and pick a top A team and then make the other
teams as equal as possible. It helps us to select
for this if runners take part in a “trial” from
the Livi Inn before this event. But you do not have
to do the trial.
Thank You,
Jim Savage

Festive Frolicks - 26th December
Updated: 28 Dec 2007
The Festive Handicap and Cockleroy Chaser were enjoyed (and by Tosh, endured) by all in breezy conditions at Beecraigs
on Boxing day. The results to both events are here.
Mags Turnbull and Martin Hyman had the following to say...
A big thanks to Pete West and family for all their work putting together another great Festive Frolicks. Not forgetting Martin,
fresh out of hospital, for putting on the kids race, Marsie and Jack for their hospitality and fab home made soup and all the
cheery marshalls - and to top it off.... it's FREE! Can you believe it?
Mags
Congratulations to all who took part with a smile. To Matthew for breaking the record of his elder brother Christopher by
one second, and to his younger brother Sam, for a remarkable time for a 9 year old.
Laura Van Kreiken improved her record by seven seconds to retain her title, but Lauren Arbuckle
improved ten seconds to finish only one second behind.
At the end you may think that Molly and Sam Dudchenko, aged four and two respectively,
were probably carried round. But not a bit of it. It was great to see them finishing
like a train, under their own steam. It is never too early to start to enjoy our great sport.
Thanks also to all helped, including Bob, the International Amateur Athletic Federation prize
judge and to Tosh the top. Also to the remarkable volunteer who wrote down all the results.
Thanks also to young Conor Anderson who helped with certificates.
