Edel does Offaly well at the Galtees.
Updated: 18th August 2008
Edel Mooney was first at the Galtees National Inter-Counties and World Mountain Running trial,
finishing nearly a minute ahead of second placed Donna Mahon of Dublin. Edel was the sole representative
of County Offaly, which gave me the opportunity for the awful headline (sorry).
Well done Edel - lets hope she gets to join Mhairi in Switzerland!

Mhairi Inglis selected for Scotland Mountain Running Team
Updated: 16th August 2008
Mhairi Inglis has been selected to represent Scotland again in the World Mountain Running Trophy in Switzerland
on the back of her excellent race at Cairngorm a couple of weeks ago. Well done Mhairi!
Looks to me as though Edel might also have been selected if eligible - all is not lost, however - the
Irish Mountain Running Trial is tomorrow in the Galtees! Better get your skates on though, as it really is a
long way to Tipperary.

David Bell completes West Highland Way triple crown
Updated: 16th August 2008
Long-distance specialist (masochist?) Davie Bell completed the Devil o' The Highlands 43 mile (Tyndrum
to Fort William) footrace in 7 hrs 02 mins 53 sec on Sat 9th Aug, coming in 13th position.
Having completed the Highland Fling and the full West Highland Way race, this race completes a hat-trick
of races any one of which would finish most off!
Davie commented that he felt surprisingly strong considering it was only 7 weeks since he ran the full WHW Race.
A remarkable achievement!

Pitreavie Forth Road Bridge 10K
Updated: 10th August 2008
The results are out, and I understand that Jill Horsburgh was first FV45.
It seems that the MSV category was not really up for grabs as 1970 commonwealth games 5000m
gold medalist, Ian Stewart, claimed it in 34:56, beating everyone else over the age of 40!
I took a few photos, which while not of the quality that you would get from roadrunpics.com
(where more photos are expected in a day or two), are available on the gallery.
Despite appearances, Mark Anderson assures me that he gave it his all.
Well done to all

Self Transecendence 3x1 mile relays
Updated: 9th August 2008
Lothian fielded two teams, and made strong contributions to a further two, in the 3 x 1 mile self-transcendence
relays on 30th July. Scott Nelson, Stevie Laurie and Darren Thomas made up the eight-placed team (cumulative time
15:30) while Alice Horsburgh, Bethany Nelson, Marie McLaughlin and Lauren Arbuckle made third-placed all-junior girls
team (21:10).
Sarah and Mhairi Inglis ran for the first-placed all female team (16:06), with Sarah notching up the quickest
individual junior girls time (4:58).
Robert Inglis was quickest junior in 4:44, running for the inexplicably named 'team
name' team.

The Arran Relay
Updated: 29th July 2008
Report from Jill Horsburgh...
A good time was had by all 6 Lothian runners, supporters, dogs and loved ones
making the annual pilgrimage to Arran for the Round Arran Relay. Edel Mooney,
Jim Alexander, Marie Storrie, Saran and Kenton Jones and myself made up the
Lothian team and we all achieved respectable times on a surprisingly hot day
(ask Jim about his sunburn!) As with all my favourite races there was loads
of tea and sandwiches available while the officials collated the results.
Overall the team finished 11th and were 2nd mixed team to Westerlands.
As usual most of the contingent
camped at Lamlash on the Saturday night although our hopes of sitting up till
the early hours were thwarted by the midges and we were driven into the tents
at a reasonable time.
Next morning Jim, Edel and Kenton were up first and out for a run along the shore
(what happened to all the plans of Goat Fell before breakfast?). Saran, Susan (Bruce)
and I went out a little later and dare I say it ran a little further , taking so long
that the midges had gone away by the time we got back for breakfast. After packing
up the tents we took a leisurely stroll up Glen Rosa with Sam, Zack and Kenton Jones
and Alice Horsburgh braving the cold water of the rock pools.
Overall it was a great weekend. Special thanks must go to Kenton and to John Bruce
for driving the bus. Can really recommend the race - in the usual post-race analysis
we were all planning which leg we want to run next year (Edel is mad enough to want
to do the hardest leg again!) and it looks like there's already one team committed -
or should that read needs to be committed?

Wednesday night Bog and Burn
Updated: 23rd July 2008
A great result on a very warm evening for Alastair Robertson who finished 12th in the penultimate Bog and Burn fixture at Turnhouse.
Alastair ran the course in 30:07, beating his clueless/shoeless chauffeur (who forgot to take appropriate footwear), by almost 5 minutes.
Having humiliated his driver so, Alastair is now looking for someone else to give him a lift to Caerketton on 13th August. The Caerketton hill race is short and
sharp and perfectly suitable for our less wrinkly athletes.
Joking aside the chauffeur's wife has had enough of me disappearing every Wednesday night leaving her to put the kids to bed - and Alastairs Bog and Burn chances rest on
finding another volunteer!
Special mention should go to Andy Kitchin and his two assistants, who organised a fantastic race. It was a short race that still packed a bit of everything,
including bovine encounters.

Great results for Suzanne Swan and Scott Fraser
Updated: 22nd July 2008
The Scottish Athletics results service seems to be on summer vacation at the moment, but Suzanne Swan won
the Turiff 10K, in spite of the fact that 'she ran a rubbish time' (her words). No results are out but
I can only assume that she is being modest.
Meanwhile Scott Fraser was 21st in the long event at the World Orienteering Champs in theCzech Republic on Sunday.
A brilliant performance by a 22 year old first timer.
Martin tells me that our youngsters ran well in Forth Valley league at Grangemouth on Saturday but again no results
as yet. More when they are out.

Herbie 3rd in class at Mull
Updated: 20th July 2008
Herbie McLean ran in the Isle of Mull Fell Race this weekend in 2 hours and fifty minutes. Sounds a long time for a medium but when you
consider that Brian Marshall set a new course record yesterday in 1 hour and 46 minutes, you realise that this is no ordinary 8 mile race.
Herbie has competed in every single SHR championship fixture so far this year, and while potential winner, Tom Ross was absent, putting Herbie
in a strong position in the current standings, Douglas Milligan is now looking a likely winner as he has
been first M60 in each of the three races he has run (only 4 count towards the championship).
The next race in the series is the Ochils 2000 next month.
Well done Herbie!

Bonaly British/Irish Junior Hillrunning Championships
Updated: 17th July 2008
The British/Irish Junior Hillrunning Championships are to be held in Scotland on Sunday 12th October this year
courtesy of a race organiser who has been behind one or two memorable events in recent years.
The races are to be held just off the Bypass on the Pentlands at Bonaly
The Championship races are open to any athlete of the specified age for each race.
There are U19, U16 and U14 events and there's even an open event for us old-timers (the only valid excuse
for absence is the Pentland Skyline).
Competitors must be over 12 on race day.
If you have aspirations to represent Scotland, there is a trial on 21st September - get in contact with
Martin for details.

Maddy Moss
Updated: 17th July 2008
Well done to ever-improving junior Alastair Robertson who not only survived the demanding Maddy Moss, his longest race to date, but
finished only 3 minutes over his very ambitious target of 1 hour.
He's going to have to run both Turnhouse (next Wednesday) and Caerketton (13th August) to be in with a chance
of being first MU23 in the prestigious Bog and Burn championship, so if anyone fancies taking the minibus to Caerketton...

Rachel McIlwraith second at Alva
Updated: 14th July 2008
The senior race was a BOFRA British Championship counter and so the field in both senior and junior races was
of a high quality with lots up from England to compete. In spite of this, Rachel finished second female and, according to the
BOFRA, was first local (on account of the fact that Bathgate is also in Scotland?).
The race itself as Rachel described it sounded like a typical BOFRA event - to quote SHR
'BOFRA specialise in brutally short, sharp, steep and rough hill races'!

Another Day, Another Dollar
Updated: 9th July 2008
Tosh Brannan and Herbie MacLean flew the Lothian colours on the Dollar Hill Race on Saturday.
Taking in Kings Seat, Andrew Gannell, Tarmangie and Whitewisp hills, it's long for a medium (if you know what I mean) and
they finished in 1:35:05 and 1:46:51. A SAL championship and U23 SHR championship counter, it was
well attended with over 100 finishers in wet conditions and a winning time of 1:13:59 by Jethro Lennox.
There are a few photos on the SHR site (link),
including one of Tosh which may not be recommended for the faint hearted!

Sandy Slither
Updated: 9th July 2008
Peter Weeks and Mark Kassyk both took part in the Sandy Slither, finishing in 44:55 and 61:25

Sandy Slither 6.1 Mile Race.
The race runs along the shore from Lower Largo to Elie and the finish at the Ship Inn does sound like
an appealing way to wind up a Friday nights racing.
There's a few photos here ,
including a good one of Mark.

Will Ramsbotham's bothy
Updated: 30th June 2008
Will Ramsbotham was a runner with the club 15 years ago, it would have been Livi then, until he was tragically killed in a climbing accident.
Martin suggested restoring the bothy as a memorial to Will - it was halfway between WIll's family in Leeds and Edinburgh, where Will was at Uni.
They did restore the bothy and it was all great for awhile but it was taken over by the Mountain Bothies Association and subsequently fell into disrepair.
The MBA recently approached Martin after some time to say they might be able to help restore it and he organised the weekend to see
what support remained, and set about trying to establish a trust to maintain the bothy as best they could.
The four that went down for the weekend (Martin, Calvin Crane, Alistair Robertson and Robin) were able to tidy the place
up a bit, and the MBA have replaced the broken (vandalised) window but the future isn't certain for the bothy.
The bothy has a plaque beside the front door commemorating Will, which you can see in the photographs that Calvin took.

Red Moss Revolution - Barbeque night
Updated: 29th June 2008
While most enjoyed the barbeque at Beecraigs, Alistair, Tosh and myself selflessly
elected to provide a three course meal for the midges at Red Moss. It was a beautiful
evening and the turnout was good (both of runners and midges). Alistair went off quickly
from the word go and that was the last we saw of him, while Tosh and myself started more
conservatively - then in my case, finished conservatively too.
It was an easy course as hill runs go - I managed to run the whole thing, except for the
steep and muddy decent of Hare hill, where I saw Tosh for the last time disappearing into the
distance along with most of the rest of the field.
The results aren't out yet - there was some calamity with the timing (which can only have worked in
my favour). There are, however, plently of photos on the SHR site and plenty of rather itchy red spots
all over my legs (but don't worry - no photos of that).
If you have any news or photos from the barbeque, please send them on.
I am told that Mary presented the XC prizes and that Mags organised the food brilliantly -
very sorry to have missed it.

West Highland way
Updated: 24th June 2008
Well done to Mags Turnbull, David Bell and Jim Alexander who completed the West Highland way race last weekend.
Mags sent the following on...
Runners have to jog, walk or crawl the 95 miles from Milngavie to Fort William. The race starts at 1am on the Saturday
morning and cut-off time is 35 hours later at noon on the Sunday. Phew - just made it then! Weather was dry during
the first day but late on Saturday evening we had torrential rain and high winds for about 8 hours!
Made negotiating the Devil's staircase a tad interesting..
Special thanks to our Support Crew - Teresa McMenemy, Jim Salvage, Allister Guy, Mark Kassyk, Mike, Hazel and Lana Turnbull,
Jack and Marsie Ewing and Marsie's sister Mora (straight from Australia). Thanks too go to Jennie Anderson for popping out
to Tyndrum to shout words of encouragement. Couldn't have done it without you all.

British and SHR championship - Durisdeer hill race
Updated: 19th June 2008
Herbie MacLean continued his SHR championship bid at Durisdeer on Saturday 14th June.
This race was also a British Championship counter and so attracted the best in the sport - twice British
Champion Robb Jebb was the winner in 01:21:53 - a new course record.
Herbie's more modest but nevertheless impressive time was 02:08:04 - a result that maintains his second place,
behind Tom Ross. Douglas Milligan of Solway in 4th position looks capable of making a strong challenge.
SHR Championships - M60 - top 4
1st - Tom Ross - Fife AC - 4 races - 53pts
2nd - Herbie MacLean - Lothian - 4 races - 47pts
3rd - Charlie Love - Dundee HH - 4 races - 42pts

Dechmont Law 10K and Fun Run results
Updated: 9th June 2008
Results and Photos.
Great event, great weather, great prizes and great clootie dumpling (if we say so ourselves).
David Miller was the winner on the day with a very quick time of 32:10, well ahead of second placed Ben Cole, in spite of a slight
detour at the end.
Susan Ridley was first Lady in 36:41. Jennifer Macmaster and Edel Mooney had a right battle at the end for second and third place!
Edel and Robin Galloway were fastest female/male club members on the day.
A stewards inquiry has ruled as groundless one competitors pathetic excuse that 'an encounter with a wee green extra-terrestrial' at the far end
of the course cost him the four seconds that he needed to get a 'sub-40'.
In the Fun Run, the youngsters ensured that all parents made it back in one piece through the wild woods.
Unfortunately, we don't have sufficient photographic evidence of who had the biggest smile at the finish (if you do, let us know), so can't give you the
official winner, but in terms of time taken, Alistair Robertson had a few seconds less fun than second placed Samuel Galloway.
Of the girls, Roisin Bonucchi was just over a minute behind Alistair.
Hope you enjoy the excellent photos taken by Richard and Peter - always nice to see yourself at your best, and I hope everyone enjoyed the
event and will be back next year. Thanks to Mags, Martin, John, Susan and all the stewards that made it happen.
Please email Mags if you spot any errors, omissions or have any suggestions for improving the event.
