SARAH 12TH IN BIRMINGHAM ‘HEAT’

Sarah Inglis finished 12th in the Women’s 5000 metres at the British Athletics Championships in Birmingham on Sunday.

Temperatures were 30c in the Alexander Stadium, same for everyone, but far from being ideal for a high profile endurance race.

A handful of the competitors succumbed to the conditions and fell out of the race.

It was actually touch and go whether Sarah would make the start line, she came down with a bug 48 hours before the race and it was only a late decision which saw her take her place in the line up for a race which was also a trial for World Championships in Doha next month.

Obviously it was hardly the best preparation, but she completed the race finishing 12th in 16m 20.48s. The effect of the heat was eveident with race winner Eilish McColgan crossing the line in 15:21.38.

Earlier in the day, Mhairi Inglis reached a podium place in the 5k run finishing 3rd.
